Is there a plan of action that every artist can follow? While I cannot offer the "7 steps to becoming the world’s greatest artist", I can offer my two cents on how to be the best artist you are capable of being. However, my advice is not original. In fact, the best advice I heard was from Scott McCloud.

1.       Learn from everyone.

2.       Copy no one.

3.       Work like hell.

Some think that artists are simply born with the talent they have. Maybe some are. For me, I had to work like crazy. But I enjoyed it the whole time. I started drawing when I was four years old. My inspiration was the Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles. Yes, I am a nerd.

In my high school years I almost drew a picture every day. The photo below shows all of my sketchbooks from elementary school through high school. They are completely full, save a few pages that I wrote on or forgot. Consider all of your favorite artists, or the artist portfolios you've seen online. The selection of illustrations in their gallery are just a few of the thousands they have made. If you added up all of the time an artist sits with their pen (or paintbrush) and paper, it would be interesting to see how many months, if not years, the time would accumulate to.

I want to dedicate this section of my website to the past. Maybe these pieces will help you see how an artist transforms over time. Or maybe you are a fellow artist who can relate to having twenty + sketchbooks and your wall strewn with art. If so, send me a message in my contact section. I’d love to hear from you and check out your work. I have to warn you, I am a child of the '90's. Much of my work is sequential art (comics) or cartoons, such as Dragon Ball Z, Batman, Superman, or Ninja Turtles. Of course I can't leave out the video games… Zelda, Mario, and Metroid. If it's Nintendo, I drew it.

With each “Blast From the Past” article, I’ll add a description of what new technique I tried. I firmly believe that the work an artist does as a child stands as a foundation for their later style. So please, enjoy!
